Welcome to Shumen

The city of Shumen lies at the foot of the Shumen Plateau, which rises to 400-502 meters. Here is the land where were Bulgaria’s first capital – Pliska and Preslav. The region is a variety of sightseeings of historical, archeological, natural, cultural, and architectural wonders. First mentioned as Shiminonis by the traveller Idrisi in the 12th century, its name is believed to be derived from the Bulgarian words “shuma” (forest) and “zashumen” (noisy), reflecting its lush and vibrant past. 

Shumen fortress

Shumen fortress is a complicated complex of residential, cult and defensive buildings. It was built during 4 periods: Early and Late Antiquity, Early and Late Middle Ages. The Bulgarian rulers used the fortress during the Second Kingdom as a second center so it was an important stronghold with an appearance of developed medieval town. A lot of artifacts, epigraphic monuments and coinage are proof of that.

Regional museum

The visitors could enjoy the artifacts in the Regional museum's halls from the different periods: Prehistory, Antiquity, Middle Ages. You can see the amazing rich Treasury hall.  You will learn about the spiritual Revival in our town from 19th century. A hall with paintings, icons and weapons awaits you.

Srebrova house

The architectural masterpiece Srebrova House, located in the Old Shumen area, is an attraction site. It accommodates wedding ceremonies, corporate events and various tastings. There is a retro photo on the first floor, with 150 national costumes and clothing from the early twentieth century. The hat studio Vesuvius has samples from 110 years ago. The house also features an exhibition showcasing the diverse ethnicities of Shumen.

Founders of the Bulgarian State monument

We continue the journey on the forest paths on foot or by car on the road leading to the monument Founders of the Bulgarian State. The impressive monument is without analogue in Europe. By means of the arts: architecture, sculpture, mosaics will make you go back to the distant 7th - 10th century.
